What is the Nore Valley Way?

The Nore Valley Way is a long-distance trail following the River Nore. The section from Thomastown to Inistioge is widely considered the jewel in the crown. It takes you through ancient woodlands, past ruined castles, and along the riverbank, ending in Inistioge—a village so pretty it was used as the set for Hollywood movies like Circle of Friends and Widow's Peak.

Important: This is a Linear Walk

Unlike the loop walks in Glendalough or Howth, this trail does not circle back. You start in Thomastown and finish 11km away in Inistioge.

  • Transport Strategy: Most hikers park in Inistioge and take a taxi to Thomastown to start the walk (walking back to their car).

  • Bus: The Ringalink bus service exists but is sporadic. Do not rely on it without checking the latest timetable.

Stage 1: Thomastown & Dysart Castle

The trail begins at the bridge in Thomastown. Follow the green arrows past the GAA pitch and onto the riverbank. About 2km in, keep your eyes peeled for the ruins of Dysart Castle on the opposite bank. This was the childhood home of the famous philosopher George Berkeley (who gave his name to Berkeley University in California). The path here winds through Dysart Woods, which are spectacular in spring when the bluebells are out.

Stage 2: The River Path

The middle section is pure tranquility. You are walking deep in the valley with the river on one side and steep woodland on the other. It feels miles away from the modern world.

  • Note: The trail can be muddy after heavy rain, so leave the white runners at home.

Stage 3: Arrival in Inistioge

As you approach Inistioge, the famous 10-arch bridge comes into view. The trail brings you right into the village square. If you still have energy, you can cross the bridge and walk up the steep hill to Woodstock Gardens and Arboretum, but most hikers are happy to settle into a chair at the Circle of Friends cafe or The Otter’s Pocket for a well-earned coffee.

Practical Tips

  • Parking: There is free parking at the Quayside in Thomastown or the riverfront in Inistioge.

  • Dogs: Unfortunately, dogs are generally not allowed on this trail as it passes through working farmland.

  • Flooding: The path sits close to the river. In winter, or after a storm, check locally if the path is passable.

Final Thoughts

This is the perfect "Sunday Stroll" if you want distance without the steep climbs of the mountains. The finish line in Inistioge is one of the most rewarding in Ireland—it feels like walking onto a movie set.
